Vic Mensa, unique hybrid

When I get down on my luck,

I hide behind my eyes in Hollywood they say

Ain’t what you know, but who you know

You need to know someone to know no one.

The chorus of Vic Mensa‘s first official single shows that this man is more than just your usual rapper. He knows that the witty ambiguity he writes his lyrics with will make you think and want to move at the same time. Mensa, a chi-town native and good friend of Chance the Rapper, first gained widespread attention with his mixtape INNANETAPE in 2013. The 20 year-old is one of the new artists from Chicago reviving Hip House, which first came up in the 1980’s. His style is so unique that even when he goes off beat, you still want to listen to him. On his songs, he shows the rare talent of being a rapper and singer at the same time without sounding like Drake. He makes every song his own and accomplishes the feat of doing Old School and Progressive Rap at the same time.

I see very few to none rappers out there who possess that ability at the moment. Down on my Luck is the first single of his upcoming EP Street Lights. The beat merges with Vic’s voice as he effortlessly rimes and sings over it. It’s hard to put his style into drawers, and that’s the beauty of it. That is what makes it fresh, new and worth listening to. Vic Mensa is a highly creative newcomer. Fasten your seat belts, because he will be a force to be reckoned with.
